Title: Quiet Waters
Artist: Gayle Bowen
Medium & Materials: Oil on premium aluminum panel
Dimensions: 30" x 30"
Collector Overview
Quiet Waters is a luminous seasonal water study that captures the quiet transition of a New England lakeshore at peak autumn. Gayle Bowen shifts away from a traditional open horizon, drawing the viewer instead into a high-angle view of a clear woodland pool where overhanging green canopy, deep water, and copper leaves meet in a richly layered surface.
About the Work
In this 30" x 30" square composition, Gayle places the viewer directly above a crystal-clear mountain pool. A dense canopy of mature summer leaves hangs across the upper-left portion of the painting, built with rhythmic brushwork in emerald, jade, and yellow-green highlights.
The lower and central areas unfold as a layered tapestry of autumn foliage. Crimson, copper orange, golden ochre, and warm sienna leaves gather along the foreground bank and drift into the clear water. At the center, darker navy passages create depth, while the upper-right reflection opens into luminous cerulean and sky-blue tones.
Light, Surface, and Material
Painted directly on polished industrial aluminum, the work gains a subtle, light-responsive luminosity. Bowen’s transparent oil glazes allow ambient light to pass through the color, reflect off the metallic surface, and return through the paint layers. This creates a shifting visual quality that echoes sunlight moving through leaves and water.
Style and Composition
- Style: Contemporary Impressionism with elements of lyrical atmospheric realism and a reflective, Monet-inspired attention to light and water.
- Composition: An immersive square layout with a diagonal movement between dense autumn leaves, deep water channels, and a bright sky-blue reflection.
- Focal point: The central clearing where yellow and copper floating leaves stand out against transparent navy water.
- Palette: Copper orange, crimson, golden ochre, warm sienna, deep cerulean, sapphire blue, emerald, and jade green.
- Atmosphere: Soft late-afternoon autumn light creates a tranquil, reflective mood with a strong sense of natural stillness.
Technique
- Brushwork: Short, choppy impasto marks define individual leaves, while broader horizontal strokes and transparent color pooling create the glass-like water surface.
- Layering and depth: Saturated foreground leaves and canopy forms rise toward the viewer, while thinner glazes create the sense of leaves resting beneath the water’s surface.
- Aluminum support: The rigid metal panel preserves crisp brushwork and amplifies natural reflections across the artwork, giving the piece added presence as light changes in the room.
