Collector Overview

Low Tide is a large-scale square coastal study that brings the viewer close to the raw geology of a New England inlet at low water. Bowen focuses on the physical drama of stone, water, and weather, capturing the moment when an approaching storm deepens the atmosphere over a rocky shoreline touched with glowing chartreuse lichen.

About the Work

In Low Tide, Gayle Bowen creates a moody and immersive coastal landscape in a commanding 30" x 30" format. The composition places the viewer at the edge of a shallow tidal pool, looking across wet stone toward a low, light-struck horizon. Long horizontal strokes and transparent underglazes give the pool a glass-like surface, shifting from cool midnight blue into copper, rust red, and burnt sienna reflections.

The center of the painting is anchored by a rugged wall of glacial rock, built with confident brushwork in charcoal, raw umber, and dark slate grey. Bright passages of chartreuse and cadmium yellow lichen cut through the darker terrain, adding warmth, contrast, and visual energy to the coastal scene.

Light, Surface, and Material

Painted directly on polished industrial aluminum, the work takes on a subtle luminosity. Gayle’s transparent oil glazes allow ambient light to pass through the color, reflect off the metallic surface, and return through the paint layers. This gives the artwork a shifting, light-responsive quality that echoes low sun breaking through an overcast sky.

Style and Composition

  • Style: Contemporary Impressionism with elements of lyrical atmospheric realism and Tonalist landscape painting.
  • Composition: A ground-level square perspective structured around a rising path of stone, balanced by a low horizon and a broad storm sky.
  • Focal point: The luminous central clearing where pale sky breaks beneath the cloud bank, contrasting with the darker rock forms below.
  • Palette: Slate grey, silver white, deep indigo, charcoal black, copper amber, rust red, and vivid chartreuse yellow.
  • Atmosphere: Quiet, dramatic, and spacious, with the feeling of coastal isolation after the tide has receded.

Technique

  • Brushwork: Choppy impasto ridges build the granite textures and lichen, while broader horizontal strokes create the smooth planes of the tidal pool.
  • Layering and depth: Transparent glazes and strong value contrasts anchor the dark foreground while pushing the pale horizon and storm sky into the distance.
  • Aluminum support: The rigid panel preserves crisp brush marks and amplifies natural reflections across the surface, giving the painting added presence in changing light.
