Overview
Low Tide is a powerful square coastal landscape by Gayle Bowen. Created in oil on an aluminum panel, the 30" x 30" composition explores the rugged beauty of a shoreline exposed at low tide.
Gayle contrasts heavy, dark coastal rocks with luminous patches of wet moss and seaweed left behind by the receding water. Beneath a dense atmospheric sky, the scene captures the raw, moody energy of the Atlantic edge.

Style and Composition
Gayle positions the viewer low and close to the shoreline, drawing the eye across a shallow tide pool in the foreground. The water ripples with fluid reflections of hidden crimson and orange twilight while revealing smooth submerged stones beneath its dark, clear surface.
From the tide pool, the composition rises into a steep rocky incline built from fractured boulders in deep charcoal, slate gray, and earthy bronze. Bright chartreuse-yellow moss and seaweed cling to the dark stone, intensified by the natural luminosity of the aluminum support.
At the crest, the terrain opens to a narrow glowing horizon where pale sunlight breaks through a heavy storm sky. The result is a dramatic statement piece that bridges classic marine subject matter with a fresh, contemporary execution.
Application and Stylistic Technique
- Brushwork and mark-making: Blocky, hard-edged strokes define the boulder planes, while fluid, loose, and scumbled layers form the glassy tide pool and low storm clouds.
- Layering and depth: Thin, dark glazes reveal submerged stones beneath the water, while heavier opaque highlights pull the glowing moss and seaweed sharply forward.
- Color and atmosphere: Charcoal gray, slate, bronze, and dark umber are energized by electric chartreuse, rust red, and pale silver-gray, creating a cool, wet, storm-lit coastal mood.
