Collector Overview
North Pasture is an immersive square-format landscape that draws the viewer into a sunlit New England valley. Gayle Bowen layers wild pasture, raspberry thicket, misted clearing, and distant blue mountains to create a warm, atmospheric work with both intimate detail and expansive depth.

About the Work

In North Pasture, Bowen places the viewer close to the land, just behind an overgrown foreground thicket that fills the lower portion of the composition. Energetic passages of chartreuse, lime, moss green, and deep forest tones create a lively veil of wild berry foliage. Bright cadmium-red raspberries and pale green unripened fruit punctuate the vegetation, catching the light and giving the foreground a vivid, tactile presence.

Beyond the thicket, the landscape opens into a broad valley pasture softened by luminous haze. Delicate passages of peach, rose, champagne cream, and pale field tones suggest grasses touched by sun and moisture. Dense walls of mature trees frame the clearing, while distant lavender-blue mountains recede softly into the background.

Painted directly on polished industrial aluminum, the work carries a distinctive inner luminosity. Bowen’s transparent oil glazes allow ambient light to pass through the painted layers, reflect from the metallic support, and return through the color. This interaction heightens the sense of sunlight filtering across the valley and gives the surface a subtle, shifting radiance.

Style & Composition

  • Style: Contemporary Impressionism with lyrical atmospheric realism and expressive Tonalist landscape influences.
  • Composition: A square-format, ground-level view organized in layered spatial bands: dense foreground foliage, glowing pasture, framed tree line, and distant mountain ridge.
  • Focal point: The vivid raspberry clusters in the foreground, where saturated red accents draw the eye through deep green foliage toward the sunlit clearing.
  • Palette: Chartreuse, lime, moss, and forest greens balanced by cadmium red, rose pink, champagne cream, pale peach, lavender blue, and misted periwinkle.
  • Atmosphere: Warm, nostalgic, and light-filled, evoking summer sunlight moving across a quiet country pasture.

Technique & Material Presence

  • Brushwork: Loose, painterly, and tactile, with broken impasto strokes defining the leaves and berries and softer scumbled passages shaping the field, mountains, and sky.
  • Layering and depth: Saturated foreground foliage, softened midground haze, and low-contrast blue mountain forms create strong foreground-to-background recession.
  • Aluminum support: The rigid metal panel preserves Bowen’s crisp surface marks while amplifying reflected light, giving the painting a contemporary, light-responsive presence.
