Roger Deering
Master of the Marine: The Enduring Legacy of Roger Deering and "Sea Turn"
For centuries, the rugged, unpredictable coastline of New England has served as a muse to generations of master painters. Few artists, however, have translated the visceral power and atmospheric drama of the North Atlantic quite like mid-century master Roger Deering (1904–1980).
At Go Native Gallery in Concord, NH, we are thrilled to announce the rare acquisition of Deering’s magnificent vintage oil masterpiece, "Sea Turn". Spanning 21.5" x 27.5", this work offers a spectacular opportunity for regional collectors to own a piece of classic American maritime history.
Capturing the Spirit of the Maine Coast
Born in Waterboro, Maine, in 1904, Roger Lincoln Deering dedicated his lifelong career to documenting the working harbors and weathered headlands of his home state. A distinguished graduate of the Portland School of Fine Arts (Class of 1926), Deering later established a prominent studio, gallery, and summer art school in the iconic coastal enclave of Kennebunkport, Maine.
Throughout his career, Deering served as a vital pillar of the East Coast arts community, acting as President of the Portland Arts and Crafts Society and holding an influential seat on the Board of Directors for the American Artists Professional League. His works were exhibited nationwide, praised for their uncompromising realism and sophisticated understanding of coastal topography.
Looking Closer at "Sea Turn"
In the maritime vocabulary of New England, a "sea turn" refers to a sudden change in wind direction that instantly blows cold, dense ocean fog across the mainland. In this spectacular oil canvas, Deering freezes that exact meteorological shift in a display of kinetic energy and brilliant light play:
- Dynamic Ocean Mechanics: The center of the canvas erupts with churning, deep teal and emerald waves crashing violently into explosive white seafoam. Deering's confident, multi-directional brushwork gives the water a tangible weight and motion.
- The Rugged Rocky Headlands: Framing the chaotic water is a heavily textured, dark rock formation reminiscent of Cape Newagen or Cape Elizabeth. The deep, earthy tones of the stone ground the painting's immense movement.
- Atmospheric Illumination: Above the surf, a heavy, overcast fog rolls across the horizon. Yet, in true Deering fashion, a soft, warm golden glow faintly pierces through the mist, bathing the distant headlands in a luminous, silver-gilt haze.
An Investment-Grade Piece for Collectors
Because Roger Deering's work sits in several prominent institutional and private collections, his original marine paintings are highly sought after at premium auctions. To find a vintage piece of this scale and visual caliber outside of an estate sale is an exceptional rarity.
With its commanding wall presence, "Sea Turn" serves as an ideal structural centerpiece for a formal living room, a corporate office, or a fine maritime art collection.
