This New England plein-air landscape captures Mount Willard above Crawford Notch in the White Mountains. A rushing, boulder-strewn river flows beneath a rustic log bridge as a passing storm gives way to a bright, sunlit sky.

In Mt. Willard, Byron Carr uses a 24" × 30" horizontal format to create an immersive mountain-valley view. A hand-built log bridge enters from the lower left, guiding the eye across the rushing stream. Moss-covered rocks, gravel banks, and textured strokes of chartreuse and olive green give the foreground a strong physical presence.
The composition opens through the central valley, where a reflective river cuts across the scene. Loose strokes of cobalt blue, slate gray, and titanium white suggest swift, foaming currents, while steep canyon walls rise on either side beneath dense green foliage.
Mount Willard’s glacier-carved granite face anchors the background. Layers of pale sage, emerald, and misty turquoise push the mountain into atmospheric distance. Above, dark slate-gray clouds give way to cerulean blue and wind-streaked white, capturing the moment a storm begins to clear. Carr’s confident brushwork, raised impasto, and balanced use of warm and cool color bring energy and depth to the scene.
