In Bear Notch Overlook, Byron Carr uses a 24" × 30" horizontal format and asymmetrical framing to create an expansive mountain view. Mature trees with copper and sienna foliage anchor the left edge, balanced by a weathered, lightning-struck stump on the right. Across the foreground, a steep ridge path is built with textured passages of raw umber, burnt sienna, and charcoal, scattered with golden leaves and glacial granite boulders.
The composition opens across a luminous valley of pale gold, chartreuse, and warm amber forest. Beyond the rocky ledges, layers of lavender-gray, periwinkle, and pale cobalt define the distant Presidential Range. Wispy ivory clouds and patches of light blue diffuse the midday sun, casting a soft haze over the landscape.
