Style and Composition
Cathryn creates an immersive woodland scene within a compact square format, pulling the viewer into what feels like a deep forest ravine blanketed in frost. The foreground and flanking sides are built from a cool, tangled network of indigo, slate blue, cerulean, and teal branch forms.
The composition uses a strong V-shaped structure, with dark foreground masses framing a central channel of glowing light. In the distance, cadmium orange, fiery amber, copper gold, and soft cream tones build a dense atmospheric fog where sunlight appears to cut across the winter tree line.
Sharp, calligraphic tree silhouettes on the right cross dramatically over the illuminated mist, creating a dynamic push-and-pull between dark structure and radiant atmosphere. The visible canvas grain and layered acrylic glazes give the surface a tactile, shimmering quality.
Application and Stylistic Technique
- Brushwork and mark-making: Scratchy, linear dry-brush marks define the bare winter branches, while soft stippling and scumbled layers build the glowing mist.
- Layering and depth: Dark, sharp blue-green foreground branches pull forward against the brighter, lower-contrast mist and distant gold tree forms, creating strong spatial depth.
- Color and atmosphere: Deep indigo, cerulean, teal, amber, copper gold, and soft cream combine to create a crisp, electric winter atmosphere charged with backlit sun and fog.
