Collector Overview
Autumn Jewels is an immersive square-format water study that captures the quiet richness of a New England lakeshore at peak autumn. Gayle Bowen shifts away from a traditional horizon view, drawing the collector’s eye into the reflective surface of a clear mountain pool where overhanging foliage, deep blue water, and copper leaves create a luminous seasonal tapestry.

About the Work

In Autumn Jewels, Bowen places the viewer above the water, looking directly into a crystal-clear pool edged by dense autumn vegetation. A mature canopy of marsh grasses and weeping foliage fills the upper-right portion of the composition, built with rhythmic passages of emerald, jade, and yellow-green. This lush green mass curves toward the water, creating a strong diagonal movement through the square format.

The lower and central field opens into a layered surface of fallen maple leaves and reflected sky. Thick, tactile passages of crimson, copper orange, golden ochre, and warm sienna gather along the foreground bank, then drift outward across the water. Beneath them, deep navy channels and brighter cerulean reflections create a vivid contrast between shadow, depth, and sunlight.

Painted directly on polished industrial aluminum, the work gains a distinctive inner luminosity. Bowen’s transparent oil glazes allow ambient light to pass through the color, reflect from the metallic support, and return through the painted surface. This light-responsive quality enhances the sensation of sunlight fracturing through water and leaves, giving the painting a vivid, shifting presence.

Style & Composition

  • Style: Contemporary Impressionism with elements of lyrical atmospheric realism and intimate, close-view landscape painting.
  • Composition: A square, top-down view organized by a strong diagonal between dense green foliage, copper leaf clusters, deep water, and bright reflected sky.
  • Focal point: The central passage where yellow, crimson, and copper leaves break against the transparent navy-blue water.
  • Palette: Copper orange, crimson, golden ochre, warm sienna, emerald green, jade, deep navy, cerulean, and sky blue.
  • Atmosphere: Quiet, reflective, and meditative, with the feeling of late-afternoon autumn light filtering through an overhead canopy.

Technique & Material Presence

  • Brushwork: Loose, painterly, and tactile, with short impasto marks defining individual leaves and broader transparent passages creating smooth areas of water and reflection.
  • Layering and depth: Saturated foreground foliage and crisp copper leaves sit close to the surface, while transparent blue glazes create the impression of leaves suspended beneath the water.
  • Aluminum support: The rigid metal panel preserves Bowen’s clean brushwork and amplifies reflected light, giving the painting a contemporary, light-responsive presence.
