Style and Composition
Bowen creates an immersive high-angle landscape that eliminates the sky and draws the viewer down to the edge of a quiet pond or slow-moving river. The lower portion of the composition is filled with a dense carpet of fallen leaves in ochre, rust, chestnut, and deep bronze, gathered along the shoreline and drifting into the water.
The oil-on-aluminum surface gives the water a striking sense of luminosity and depth. On the left, the water reflects a bright, cloud-filled sky in clear cerulean and soft blue tones. Farther back, horizontal ripples merge dark surface water with warm gold and crimson reflections from distant autumn trees.
