Style and Composition
Laurie presents a deeply dramatic seascape defined by a low, sharp horizon line that gives most of the canvas to a shifting, heavy sky. Churning storm clouds sweep down from the upper left in deep slate gray and moody indigo, suggesting a downpour moving across the sea.
To the right, the storm begins to break, allowing pale filtered light to move through the mist in soft cream and ivory tones. This subtle illumination gives the sky volume and contrast while preserving the painting’s cool, storm-charged mood.
The lower third balances the weight of the sky with the motion of the sea. Along the horizon, the open ocean appears in deep, near-black indigo. Moving forward, the water breaks into rolling bands of surf, where thick strokes of bright white and silver gray suggest cresting foam rushing toward shore.
