Gallery Description

In Stripe A-Derm, regional illustrator and painter Mike Driscoll creates a playful, light-filled landscape in a balanced 12-inch square format. Departing from conventional realism, he places a fantastical creature at the center of a serene marshy cove. The lower half of the composition is occupied by a glassy pond rendered in fluid horizontal washes of grass green, chartreuse, and transparent mint. Tiny red-pink water lilies drift across the left shallows among slender vertical reeds.

The creature forms the composition’s narrative and visual center, standing prominently in the shallow water. Its large arched body moves through a gradient of teal and turquoise, interrupted by fine vertical white stripes. Dozens of spindly spikes rise along its back, while a long striped tail curves gracefully into the air.

Four sturdy legs are banded in violet and pale lavender, with reflections extending into the pond as the creature lowers its snout toward the water’s edge. Near the head, two broad curved horns in sunlit chartreuse provide a vivid point of contrast. A dark horizontal treeline and hazy gray-blue mountain ridges frame the scene, giving this charming illustration a fresh, joyful, and nostalgic atmosphere suited to a contemporary collection.

Style & Composition

  • Artistic Style: Whimsical realism, contemporary illustration, and narrative landscape.
  • Composition: A ground-level landscape arranged within a square frame. A centralized subject anchors horizontal bands of terrain: the lily pond in the foreground, the marsh bank in the middle distance, and the forest and mountain ridges beyond.
  • Focal Point: The creature’s head on the right-center axis, where its highly saturated chartreuse horns stand out against the muted green trees and hazy gray mountains.
  • Color Palette: A lively spectrum of grass greens, teal blues, and pale lavenders, sharpened by chartreuse yellow, soft pink-red accents, and grounding charcoal ink.
  • Lighting & Atmosphere: Soft, diffused midday light supports transparent reflections of the violet legs in the pond, creating a fresh, cheerful, and imaginative wilderness scene.

Application & Stylistic Technique

  • Brushwork & Mark-Making: Soft wet-on-wet washes blend the distant hills and sky, while crisp pen-and-ink lines define individual reeds and the creature’s playful contours.
  • Layering & Depth: Transparent washes and strong value contrasts establish depth. The creature's saturated blues and yellows bring it forward, while the softly blended gray mountains recede into the distance.
  • Materials & Tools: Fine-art watercolor pigments and waterproof drawing inks are applied to heavyweight, fine-grain cotton paper, preserving crisp edges and luminous transparency without muddying the color fields.
