Gallery Description

In “Poppies Once More,” internationally acclaimed impressionist painter Monique Sakellarios creates a richly textured, light-filled vignette within a compact 4" × 4" square format. Viewed from ground level, the composition devotes more than two-thirds of the panel to a sweeping field of crimson poppies set against a luminous periwinkle sky. Loose, physical mark-making animates the foreground: thick, unblended passages of cadmium red, deep magenta, and ruby suggest windblown blossoms in direct sunlight, while short strokes of golden ochre and olive green anchor the field with grasses.

The scene’s narrative and structural focus is a solitary figure in the central midground, sketched in a dark espresso-charcoal coat and pale cap. Walking away along a narrow ridge trail, the figure is nearly enveloped by the fiery field. A dense horizontal band of mature trees and deep olive brush balances the composition above, while broad strokes of periwinkle and lavender blue open the sky beyond. Sakellarios’s sculptural impasto and command of saturated jewel tones transform this pocket-sized landscape into a vivid, meditative sanctuary.

Style & Composition

  • Artistic Style: Contemporary Impressionism, lyrical plein-air realism, and expressionist color field.
  • Composition: A ground-level square perspective is organized into horizontal zones of poppy field, forest, and sky. A single figure on the central vertical axis adds narrative focus and establishes scale.
  • Focal Point: The solitary figure stands near the central midground, where the bright red poppies meet the shadowed forest and luminous periwinkle sky.
  • Color Palette: Saturated cadmium reds, rubies, and deep magentas are balanced by periwinkle and lavender blues, fresh olive greens, and warm golden ochres.
  • Lighting & Atmosphere: Bright mid-afternoon summer light casts short, rich shadows and creates a fresh, cheerful sense of countryside calm.

Application & Stylistic Technique

  • Brushwork & Mark-Making: Loose, heavily layered strokes create a tactile surface. Broken impasto ridges, loaded blocks of color, and swirling dabs sculpt the wildflower heads while preserving the immediacy of the artist’s gesture.
  • Layering & Depth: Contrasts in texture, saturation, and value create convincing depth within the shallow square format. The vivid red-and-gold foreground advances toward the viewer, while the softly blended blue sky recedes into the distance.
  • Materials & Support: Heavy-body oil paint is applied directly to a prepared Masonite panel. The rigid surface preserves crisp boundaries and the physical character of each distinct passage of color.
