Style and Composition
Crisp anchors the composition with an altered reproduction of Gustav Klimt’s 1898 Symbolist painting Pallas Athena. The central goddess stands resolute in her golden helmet and scale-like aegis breastplate, which Crisp transforms with hundreds of individually applied metallic cabochons in gold, bronze, and copper.
Athena holds her spear at the right, bordered by rows of shimmering turquoise beads. Around the figure, a dazzling patchwork grid of decorative fields brings together gold damask motifs, organic black-and-gold linework, psychedelic target circles, and luminous faux-pearl droplets, heightening the work’s mythological grandeur.

Application and Technique

  • Collage and iconography integration: Crisp merges Secessionist art history with contemporary visionary patterning, recontextualizing classical symbolism through a modern, tactile lens.
  • Texture and dimensional relief: Raised metallic droplets and pearlescent beads create an intensely tactile surface that lifts from the panel and catches overhead gallery light.
  • Color interplay: Blazing metallic golds, bright copper tones, and turquoise beadwork are grounded by deep black, rich purple, and soft pink patterns, giving the complex composition visual structure and balance.
