Style and Composition
Marilyn places the viewer at the mouth of a calm tidal channel, using the rocky shorelines on either side to create a natural gateway into the open cove. The foreground water ripples with soft horizontal strokes, shifting from cool slate-blue and lavender shadows to pale-gold reflections where the sky meets the surface.
Loose, blocky passages of deep umber, gray, and mossy green define the rugged granite ledges typical of the Maine and Massachusetts coast. Beyond them, a soft wall of midsummer trees lines the distant shore.
