Title: "Between the Lines"
Artist: Ofe Polack
Medium & Materials: Mixed media on fine-art paper, incorporating charcoal textures, acrylic washes, and calligraphic graphite overlays
Dimensions: 24" x 35"
This atmospheric mixed-media work explores the tension between geometric structure and organic fluidity. Fine, mesh-like grids and charcoal lines intersect with soft, sweeping watercolor fields, suggesting what is revealed and concealed “between the lines” of our sensory environment.
Gallery Description
In "Between the Lines," Ofe Polack brings tactile depth and atmosphere to a 24" x 35" horizontal composition. Rather than depicting a conventional setting, the work explores material abstraction through intricate linework and layers of transparency. Deep charcoal, carbon black, and silver-grey washes form a dense foundation across the central and lower fields. Hand-ruled lines and freehand calligraphic marks cross these layers, guiding the eye across the paper.
Tonal and material contrasts give the work its visual focus. Pale champagne cream, soft periwinkle blue, and transparent gold underglazes create luminous openings within the dark charcoal passages. Blocks of chalky white gesso or opaque gouache are scumbled over fine graphite grids, while exposed areas of paper reveal the underlying surface and the history of its layers.
Sharp pencil scratches and fine charcoal smudges establish a rhythmic movement across the surface. Controlled edges and subtle tonal shifts balance this energetic mark-making with a meditative atmosphere, giving the original horizontal work a distinctive presence within a contemporary fine-art collection.
Style & Composition
Artistic Style: Contemporary material abstraction, lyrical minimalism, and expressive post-industrial assemblage.
Composition Type: A horizon-guided, panoramic layout built on a layered geometric grid. Leading lines guide the eye through vertical, diagonal, and cross-hatched structures.
Focal Point: The central intersection where dark charcoal lines cross luminous white gesso folds and pale champagne clearings.
Color Palette: Deep charcoal, carbon black, and silver-grey, balanced by pale champagne cream, misty periwinkle blue, and crisp ivory-white.
Lighting & Atmosphere: Direct gallery lighting accentuates the transparent glazes and paper surface, bringing out fine calligraphic scratches and soft shadows. These effects reinforce the work’s serene, expansive atmosphere.
Materials & Technique
Mixed-Media Layering: Surface build-up and fine-tool reduction create depth and variation. Broad, transparent acrylic washes establish atmosphere, dry-brushed scumbling adds texture, and sharp calligraphic graphite marks define individual grid sections.
Texture Overlays: Satin acrylic washes contrast with powdery, hand-rubbed charcoal and the metallic grit of hard-lead graphite marks.
Paper Support: Heavyweight, fine-grain cotton paper allows Polack to preserve sharp geometric boundaries and areas of surface transparency without buckling.
