Description

In Afternoon Stroll, Monique Sakellarios creates an intimate yet expansive meadow scene on a 5" x 5" Masonite panel. The viewer is placed low in an overgrown pasture, looking across a rolling clearing in warm afternoon light. Thick diagonal strokes of moss green, olive, and raw umber create a tactile, richly textured foreground.

The midground opens into a bright, sunlit pasture built from layered impasto strokes of cadmium yellow, golden ochre, and warm copper orange. This glowing band suggests ripe wheat or sun-bleached summer grass. At the right, a small figure in white adds a quiet narrative element, introducing movement and a subtle human presence.

Rows of summer trees frame the clearing with dense, mossy shadows, while a small opening of cerulean sky appears above the treeline. Pink-tipped clouds catch the low sun, adding warmth and atmosphere. Through confident, heavily loaded brushwork, Sakellarios gives the miniature format a sense of breadth, making the painting feel both intimate and immersive.

Style & Composition

  • Artistic Style: Classical French Impressionism interpreted through a contemporary plein air sensibility.
  • Composition: A balanced square format organized around a strong horizontal band of golden pasture. The tall tree mass on the left provides weight, while the small figure on the right creates visual counterbalance.
  • Focal Point: The figure in white walking through the field, clearly set against the darker forest background.
  • Color Palette: Deep moss greens, olive tones, and charcoal shadows are balanced by cadmium yellow, copper gold, and a bright touch of cerulean blue sky.
  • Lighting & Atmosphere: Low late-afternoon sunlight creates a warm, nostalgic countryside mood, with strong contrasts between the glowing field and shaded woodland.

Application & Stylistic Technique

  • Brushwork / Mark-Making: The brushwork is loose, physical, and gestural. Thick impasto strokes shape the rolling field, short broken dabs build the foliage, and circular, multidirectional marks animate the clouds.
  • Layering & Depth: Strong contrasts in tone and temperature bring the saturated yellow field and white figure forward, while the darker, lower-contrast forest recedes into the background.
  • Materials & Tools: Heavy-body oil paint on rigid Masonite board, applied with small flat-bristle brushes and a loaded brush tip to preserve the raised ridges and raw surface texture.
