This rug is a classic Turkmen Ersari tribal rug, woven in the distinct diamond lattice design. Originating among the Ersari Turkmen weavers (traditionally from regions spanning Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and northern Afghanistan), this style stands out from standard Turkmen rugs by replacing the typical rows of repeating octagonal gül medallions with a continuous all-over geometric grid.

Design Details & Motifs
  • The Field: Features an intricate stepped diamond lattice grid. Inside each diamond is a sharp geometric cross/star motif rendered in terracotta orange, golden-yellow, black, and ivory.
  • The Borders: Framed by multiple-layered geometric borders. The wide main border displays a beautiful chain of checkerboard diamonds and abstract "Sigma" (Σ) zig-zag patterns.
  • The Color Palette: Rooted in warm, traditional earth tones—a characteristic mix of soft terracotta red, burnt orange, golden yellow, and deep brown accented by ivory.
  • Weave: The back reveals a tight, hand-knotted wool pile structure. The asymmetric knotting creates the highly geometric, pixelated lines typical of authentic Central Asian nomadic weaves
  • The Back and Fringe: Turning the corner reveals the clean, uniform grid on the reverse side, showing it was finely crafted on a vertical loom. It features a natural, short-trimmed white cotton or wool fringe on both ends.
  • Origin: This is associated with Afghan Ersari and Andkhoy regional weaving traditions, which are highly prized by collectors for their rich use of natural plant-based dyes.

This rug is estimated to be circa 1940s–1950s, giving it an approximate age of 70-80 years.
